‘Isolation’

‘Isolation’ is a collection of macro images of prairie vegetation commonly found in Northern Illinois.  They are photographed using a shallow depth of field to create significant separation between the subjects and carefully considered backgrounds.  I have chosen plants which are dying, damaged, and deformed as my focus.  Considering the figure/ground relationship, I then composed the images in such a way as to separate all or part of the subject from the background or other objects around them creating a sense of isolation.  I gave careful attention to the background and bokeh to ensure they included interesting patterns, lines, and subtle colors.

For many years I have struggled with depression and low self-esteem.  I view the subjects in my work as a personification of myself, damaged and alone, when dealing with the world at large.  Viewing myself as not good enough, I often create distance from those around me as a means of avoiding further pain and betrayal, ultimately leading to isolation.  I know I am not the only person who feels like this.  Depression and other mental illnesses seem to be becoming more commonplace.  Through technology, we have become more connected to those around us, yet it seems we are more physically and emotionally isolated than ever before.
